Shastra Study

Shastra (sacred text) study group started in 1998. It came about when I realized that our community had a significant interest in yoga philosophy. Study started to take up more and more class time and not everyone was interested. So we began to meet 30 minutes before asana class to make this part optional. We have met every Tuesday morning since for 12 years now.

We have studied the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, The Bhagavad Gita,  the Bhakti Sutras of Narada, the Upanisads, the Astavakra Gita, select yogic stories from Srimad Bhagavatam, the Hamsa Gita. “Bhakti Yoga”, and divine hierarchies by Edwin Bryant. We are currently studying Hathayogapradipika by Swawarama.

We recite in Sanskrit as best we can.

My teacher, Patricia Walden once commented that "to practice yoga without studying the sacred texts was like being in a plane without radar--you simply did not know where you were going."

Teachers Edwin Bryant and Satya Narayana Dasa are an integral part of our group.

All are welcome, no experience necessary.
